TITLE: Improbable Loves [Part 2]
DATE: 2002
MEDIA: archival digital prints on rag paper
DESCRIPTION:

Taking a cue from taxidermy exhibition catalogs, I created a "gallery of specimens" to my own specifications. The extra arms, legs and heads that my creatures sport mimic taxidermy grotesques from the turn of the century (preserved 2-headed calf on a satin pillow; a 5 legged kitten), while also bringing intro focus the remarkably perverse practice of taxidermy.

As much as taxidermy purports to preserve "nature", it also constructs that nature into a rigid paradigm through the standardization of the craft via pre-cast forms which essentially create an uber-animal that the skins are molded to. The inherent variety of nature is minimized; all deer become "a Deer".
